I come from a place where there is not much to do, other than shopping, drinking beer and dying. Where the city was always further away than the moon and the stars (and 1 hour by bus and 30min by car(s)). It was (outer) space, and I wanted to discover it. My own personal universe.
As I grew older, my interest in the city and in travelling grew exponentially. This was particularly true of train travel, which admittedly is as distant to most people in the town I come from as the moon and the stars (as there is no train station there).
To this day, I don’t know whether my grandmother, let alone my father, have ever set foot on a train. At the same time, it was his analogue camera that allowed me to document this very universe for the first time.
Several circumnavigations by train later (I’m not joking, I’m tracking every journey), I’m still taking photos. And not only that – I’ve also created sculptures, poems and performances, amongst other things.
For example, I sat for an hour in the freezing cold in Rotterdam Keizerswaard on a camping chair in a spot that could generously be described as wasteland. If you’re wondering why (and that’s absolutely fair), just click here
